Description

This delicious Sloppy Joe Garlic Bread recipe combines the savory flavors of classic sloppy joes with crispy garlic bread, topped with melted mozzarella and cheddar cheese. Perfect for a hearty dinner, this dish features seasoned ground beef cooked with onions and a tangy ketchup-based sauce, spread over buttered garlic bread and baked until golden and bubbly.

Ingredients

Scale

Garlic Bread

  • 1 loaf Italian bread
  • ½ cup (1 stick / 113 g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt

Sloppy Joe Filling

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • ¼ cup yellow onion, chopped
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • ¾ cup (180 g) ketchup
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ cup water

Topping

  • 1 cup (113 g) mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1 cup (113 g) sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • Parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Bread: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Slice the loaf of Italian bread lengthwise into two halves and place them cut side up on the prepared baking sheet.
  2. Make Garlic Butter Spread: In a small bowl, mix the softened unsalted butter with garlic salt until well combined. Spread this garlic butter mixture evenly over the cut sides of the bread. Set aside while you prepare the filling.
  3. Cook the Sloppy Joe Filling: Heat a medium nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the ground beef and chopped yellow onion, cooking until the beef is fully browned and no longer pink, about 8 to 10 minutes. Drain any excess grease from the skillet.
  4. Season the Filling: Add garlic powder, yellow mustard, ketchup, kosher salt, black pepper, and water to the cooked beef mixture. Stir well to combine and allow to simmer briefly until heated through and flavors meld.
  5. Assemble the Sloppy Joe Bread: Evenly divide the sloppy joe mixture between the two halves of the prepared bread. Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella and sharp cheddar cheese on top of the meat mixture.
  6. Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 12 to 14 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese has melted and is bubbly.
  7. Serve: Remove from the oven, cut into serving pieces, and garnish with chopped parsley. Serve warm and enjoy your hearty sloppy joe garlic bread!

Notes

  • To reduce grease, be sure to drain the cooked beef thoroughly before adding the seasonings.
  • You can use different types of bread such as French or sourdough for a variation in texture and flavor.
  • For a spicier version, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or diced jalapeños to the filling.
  • If you prefer, substitute ground turkey for a leaner meat option.
  • Leftover sloppy joe mixture can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
