  • Yield: 4 servings 1x

Description

This creamy turkey broccoli skillet is a delicious and satisfying one-pan meal featuring tender penne pasta, fresh broccoli, flavorful turkey sausage, and a rich cheddar cheese sauce. It’s an easy-to-make dish perfect for weeknight dinners, combining protein and veggies in a creamy, comforting sauce.

Ingredients

Scale

Pasta and Vegetables

  • 8 ounces penne pasta
  • 2 cups fresh broccoli florets

Protein

  • 13.9 ounces turkey sausage

Dairy and Sauce

  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mild cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

Aromatics and Seasoning

  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Cook Pasta and Broccoli: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the penne pasta according to the package instructions, and add the broccoli florets during the last 2 minutes of cooking. Drain the pasta and broccoli and set aside.
  2. Sauté Turkey Sausage: Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Melt the butter in the skillet, then add the turkey sausage. Cook until the sausage is lightly browned, about 5 minutes, breaking it up as it cooks.
  3. Cook Aromatics: Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté for 2 to 3 minutes until the onion is softened and fragrant.
  4. Prepare Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk the cornstarch into the whole milk until smooth. Pour this mixture into the skillet with the sausage and vegetables. Simmer, stirring frequently, for 3 to 5 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  5. Add Cheese: Reduce the heat to low and stir in the shredded mild cheddar cheese until completely melted and the sauce is creamy.
  6. Combine and Season: Add the cooked pasta and broccoli back into the skillet. Toss gently to coat the pasta evenly with the sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately while hot.

Notes

  • Use turkey sausage with your preferred seasoning for different flavor profiles.
  • You can substitute broccoli with other vegetables like spinach or peas if desired.
  • For a lighter option, substitute whole milk with 2% milk or a milk alternative, though this may affect creaminess.
  • Make sure to stir the sauce continuously when simmering to avoid lumps.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated on the stovetop with a splash of milk to loosen the sauce.
