Ingredients
Scale
Apple Fries
- 2 large apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or your favorite variety)
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs, beaten
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs (or regular breadcrumbs)
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- Cooking spray
Dipping Sauce (Optional)
- 1/2 cup caramel sauce
- 1/2 cup vanilla yogurt (optional for a lighter option)
Instructions
- Prepare the Apples: Slice the apples into 1/2 inch thick wedges, keeping the skin on or peeling as you prefer. Remove the core and seeds. Mix the cinnamon and sugar in a small bowl and set aside.
- Set Up the Breading Station: Arrange three shallow bowls: put the flour in the first, beaten eggs in the second, and mix panko breadcrumbs with half of the cinnamon-sugar mixture in the third.
- Coat the Apple Slices: Dredge each apple slice in flour, shake off excess, dip into the beaten eggs ensuring full coverage, then coat thoroughly in the breadcrumb mixture. Repeat for all slices.
- Preheat and Arrange: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 3 minutes. Arrange the breaded apple slices in a single layer in the air fryer basket, working in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding. Lightly spray the tops with cooking spray.
- Air Fry Until Crispy: Air fry at 375°F for 8 to 10 minutes, flipping slices halfway through. Watch closely after 8 minutes for golden-brown color and a crunchy exterior.
- Sprinkle and Serve: After air frying, immediately sprinkle the remaining cinnamon-sugar mixture over the hot fries to melt slightly. Serve immediately with your choice of caramel sauce or vanilla yogurt dipping sauces.
Notes
- Use Granny Smith apples for a tart balance or Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Gala for sweeter fries.
- Panko breadcrumbs give extra crispiness but regular breadcrumbs will work in a pinch.
- For a tropical twist, try mixing some finely shredded coconut into the panko.
- To make gluten-free, substitute the flour and breadcrumbs with gluten-free alternatives.
- Try dips like chocolate sauce, dulce de leche, whipped cream, or peanut butter.
- Best enjoyed fresh; reheat leftovers in the air fryer for a few minutes to crisp again.
