Description

Crispy Chicken Wonton Tacos combine tender teriyaki-marinated chicken with a fresh and tangy coleslaw, all nestled inside crunchy fried wonton wrappers. This fusion dish merges Asian flavors with the fun, bite-sized appeal of tacos, making it a perfect appetizer or light meal that’s quick to prepare and deliciously satisfying.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken Marinade

  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup teriyaki sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil (divided)
  • 1 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated

Coleslaw

  • 2 cups coleslaw mix (cabbage and carrots)
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1/2 tbsp sesame oil (from the divided amount)

Assembly and Garnish

  • 12 wonton wrappers
  • 2 tbsp sweet chili sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds
  • 2 tbsp chopped cilantro
  • oil for frying wontons (about 1 cup, vegetable or canola oil recommended)

Instructions

  1. Marinate the Chicken: In a bowl, combine the thinly sliced chicken breasts with teriyaki sauce, 1/2 tablespoon of sesame oil, soy sauce, minced garlic, and grated ginger. Mix well to coat the chicken evenly. Cover and let it marinate for 10 minutes to absorb the flavors.
  2. Cook the Chicken: Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add the marinated chicken and cook for about 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the chicken is fully cooked and slightly caramelized. Remove from heat and set aside.
  3. Prepare the Coleslaw: In a bowl, toss together the coleslaw mix, thinly sliced green onions, rice vinegar, honey, and the remaining 1/2 tablespoon of sesame oil. Mix thoroughly to evenly distribute the dressing and flavors.
  4. Fry the Wonton Wrappers: Pour oil into a deep skillet or pan and heat over medium to medium-high heat. Once hot, carefully fry each wonton wrapper for 20 to 30 seconds on each side, or until they turn golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove them and drain on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  5. Assemble the Tacos: Place crispy wonton wrappers on a serving plate. Fill each wrapper with a portion of cooked chicken, then add a generous scoop of coleslaw on top. Drizzle with sweet chili sauce to add a sweet and spicy kick.
  6. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle sesame seeds and chopped cilantro over each wonton taco for added texture and fresh herbal notes. Serve immediately while the wrappers are crispy for the best eating experience.

Notes

  • Use a thermometer to ensure oil is around 350°F (175°C) when frying wonton wrappers for optimal crispness.
  • Thinly slicing chicken helps it cook evenly and quickly.
  • If preferred, bake wonton wrappers for a lower-fat option, but they won’t be as crispy as fried.
  • Adjust sweet chili sauce amount based on your desired spice level.
  • Wonton wrappers can be found in the refrigerated section of most grocery stores or Asian markets.
