Perfect for breakfast or brunch, it features chunks of cinnamon rolls soaked in a rich custard mixture and baked until golden and fluffy, then topped with sweet frosting for an indulgent treat.
Ingredients
Scale
Cinnamon Roll Base
- 2 tubes refrigerated cinnamon rolls (8 cinnamon rolls each – 351 grams or 12 oz)
- ¼ cup salted butter (melted)
Custard Mixture
- ½ cup milk
- ½ cup pure maple syrup
- 3 eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Topping
- Frosting from the cinnamon roll packages
Instructions
- Preheat and prepare baking dish: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Lightly spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with nonstick spray. Pour in the melted butter or place a stick of butter in the dish and let it melt in the oven.
- Prepare cinnamon rolls: Remove the cinnamon rolls from their packaging, reserving the included frosting for later use. Cut each cinnamon roll into approximately ¾-inch pieces and spread them evenly in the prepared baking dish.
- Make custard mixture: In a bowl, whisk together the milk, pure maple syrup, eggs, vanilla extract, and cinnamon thoroughly, ensuring the eggs are fully incorporated and the mixture is smooth.
- Assemble and bake: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the cinnamon roll pieces in the baking dish. Bake in the preheated oven for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the casserole is lightly golden brown, puffed, and set in the center.
- Cool and serve: Allow the casserole to cool for 10 to 15 minutes after baking. Drizzle the reserved frosting over the top just before serving to add sweetness and a creamy finish.
Notes
- Use refrigerated cinnamon rolls with included frosting for best flavor and convenience.
- Be careful not to overbake; casserole should be set but still moist and custardy inside.
- Letting the casserole cool slightly helps it to set and makes it easier to serve.
- Maple syrup adds natural sweetness, but you can adjust or substitute with honey or brown sugar if preferred.
- This dish can be prepared the night before by assembling and refrigerating the casserole; then bake it fresh in the morning.
