Ingredients
Scale
Bread and Filling
- 8 slices of brioche or challah bread
- 4 oz cream cheese, softened
- 2 tbsp powdered sugar (plus more for dusting)
- 1/2 cup fresh strawberries, sliced
- 1/4 cup strawberry jam
Egg Wash and Frying
- 2 large eggs
- 3 tbsp milk
- 2 tbsp butter (for frying)
Instructions
- Prepare Cream Cheese Mixture: In a small bowl, combine the softened cream cheese and 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar. Mix until the mixture is smooth, creamy, and well blended.
- Assemble Sandwiches: Spread the sweetened cream cheese mixture evenly onto one side of four bread slices. Layer sliced strawberries and a spoonful of strawberry jam over the cream cheese. Top with the remaining four bread slices to form sandwiches.
- Make Egg Wash: In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs and milk until fully combined to create the egg wash.
- Coat Sandwiches: Dip each sandwich into the egg wash, ensuring both sides are thoroughly coated for an even fry.
- Heat Skillet and Melt Butter: Place a large skillet over medium heat and melt 1 tablespoon of butter.
- Fry Sandwiches: Place the dipped sandwiches in the skillet and fry for 2 to 3 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and crisp. Add the remaining tablespoon of butter as needed to fry the second batch.
- Drain and Dust: Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and let them drain on a paper towel-lined plate. Dust with additional powdered sugar before serving for a sweet, elegant finish.
Notes
- Use brioche or challah bread for the best flavor and texture; other soft bread varieties can work but may alter taste.
- Ensure cream cheese is softened for easy spreading.
- Fresh strawberries add brightness and texture; substitute with other berries if preferred.
- Serve immediately for the best taste and crunch.
- Adjust frying temperature as needed to avoid burning the bread.
