Glow in the Dark Rice Krispies Treats Recipe

  • Author: Gabriel
  • Total Time: 2 hours 15 minutes
  • Yield: About 12 to 16 squares 1x
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

Glow in the Dark Rice Krispies Treats transform the classic childhood snack into a fun and luminous delight by incorporating tonic water containing quinine, which causes the treats to glow under blacklight. Enhanced with optional neon food coloring and shaped using silicone molds or pans, these treats offer a visually stunning and playful dessert perfect for Halloween parties, science-themed events, or any glow-in-the-dark occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
  • 4 cups mini marshmallows
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup tonic water (must contain quinine for the glow effect)
  • Neon food coloring (optional, for maximum visual impact)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Pan: Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking pan with butter or non-stick spray. Alternatively, use silicone molds in desired shapes like stars or pumpkins. Set aside.
  2. Melt the Butter and Marshmallows: In a large saucepan over low heat, melt the butter. Add the mini marshmallows and stir continuously until smooth and fully melted.
  3. Add Tonic Water: Remove the saucepan from heat, quickly pour in 1/4 cup tonic water, and stir vigorously. The mixture may become slightly frothy; this infusion imbues the glow effect.
  4. Add Food Coloring (Optional): For vibrant colors, divide the marshmallow mixture into bowls and stir in drops of neon food coloring until evenly mixed.
  5. Combine with Rice Krispies: Add the cereal to each colored marshmallow mixture and gently stir until every piece is coated.
  6. Transfer and Press: Spoon the coated mixture into the prepared pan or molds. Press firmly and evenly using greased parchment paper or a buttered spatula.
  7. Let Them Set: Allow the treats to cool and set at room temperature for 1–2 hours before cutting or unmolding. Enjoy the glow effect under a blacklight.

Notes

  • Glow effect appears only under a blacklight; tonic water must contain quinine for glowing properties.
  • Use fresh marshmallows to ensure smooth melting and ideal texture.
  • Grease spatulas, hands, and pressing tools to prevent sticking when handling the mixture.
  • Work quickly while mixing and pressing, as the marshmallow sets fast.
  • Store treats in an airtight container at room temperature; best consumed within 48 hours.
  • Freezing is not recommended as it deteriorates texture and glow.
