Smash Burger Tacos combine the juicy, crispy goodness of classic smash burgers with the handheld convenience of a soft tortilla. Ground beef is seasoned, pressed onto warm tortillas, cooked to a perfect crisp, and topped with melted cheese, fresh diced onions, dill pickle chips, and shredded iceberg lettuce for a flavorful taco experience that’s quick and satisfying.
Ingredients
Scale
For the Tacos
- 4 flour tortillas (6 inches)
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tablespoon neutral oil (vegetable, canola, or avocado)
- 4 slices American cheese (or preferred cheese)
- 1 small onion, diced
- Dill pickle chips
- Shredded iceberg lettuce
Instructions
- Divide the beef: Portion the ground beef into 4 equal parts to ensure uniform cooking and perfect size for each tortilla.
- Shape on tortillas: Spread each portion of ground beef evenly over one tortilla, seasoning the meat with salt and pepper to taste for balanced flavor.
- Heat the skillet: Warm a non-stick skillet over medium-high heat and add the neutral oil to prevent sticking and promote browning.
- Cook meat side down: Place each tortilla with the beef meat-side down in the skillet, cooking for 2-3 minutes until the meat forms a golden-brown, crispy crust.
- Flip and add cheese: Carefully flip the tortilla, then top the cooked beef with a slice of American cheese. Cook for an additional 1-3 minutes until the cheese melts and the meat is fully cooked.
- Remove and repeat: Take the cooked taco off the skillet and repeat the process with remaining tortillas and beef portions.
- Assemble tacos: Once all tacos are cooked, assemble by adding diced onions, dill pickle chips, and shredded iceberg lettuce to each for added crunch and flavor. Optionally, add your favorite sauce to finish.
Notes
- Use lean ground beef (90/10) for best balance of flavor and less grease.
- Press the meat thinly for an authentic smash burger texture and crispiness.
- American cheese melts best for a classic taste but cheddar or pepper jack work well too.
- Serve immediately for best texture; leftovers can get soggy.
- Substitute flour tortillas for corn tortillas for a gluten-free option.
- Optional sauces like mayo, ketchup, or mustard can enhance flavors.
